The City’s design standards for those districts are clear about what they want: maintain and repair historic exterior features before considering replacement, avoid vinyl windows and false divided lites, and repair single‑pane wood windows so they are tight and weather‑stripped rather than swapping them for dual‑pane units. If a previous owner already put aluminum or vinyl in, the standards ask for a return to wood where wood was there originally.
In practice that means the cheapest and the most correct answer are usually the same one: keep the sash, replace the glass. That is our normal day.
Projects on properties inside an adopted historic district get reviewed against the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and the district’s own design standards — Sacramento handles this through Preservation Site Plan and Design Review, not a certificate of appropriateness. Talk to City preservation staff before any exterior change, and we will quote the work to what the standards allow. Repairing and re‑glazing the original sash is the option those standards prefer.
