Window replacement

Vinyl vs Aluminum Windows for Sacramento Homes

Drive through almost any Sacramento neighborhood built before the 1990s and you will see thin aluminum window frames. When it is time to replace them, most people end up choosing between vinyl and modern aluminum. Here is how they compare.

The short answer

For most Sacramento homes, vinyl is the go-to replacement. It insulates much better than standard aluminum, never needs painting, and usually costs less. Modern aluminum with a thermal break makes sense for a slim, modern look or very large openings. Old single pane aluminum is the worst of both worlds: the frame conducts heat and the single glass lets it straight through.

Why old aluminum windows feel so hot

Aluminum conducts heat very well. On a hundred degree afternoon, an old aluminum frame gets hot to the touch and carries that heat inside. On cold mornings it does the opposite, and you see condensation on the frame. Pair that with single pane glass and you have about the least efficient window a house can have.

Vinyl windows

  • Insulates far better. Vinyl frames are built with hollow chambers that slow heat down.
  • No painting. The color runs all the way through, and they clean up with soap and water.
  • Usually the lower cost option for a quality dual pane window.
  • Made for stucco homes too. Vinyl comes in retrofit versions that go in without cutting stucco. Here is retrofit vs new construction windows.
  • Slightly thicker frames than old aluminum, so you see a little more frame.
  • Dark colors need care. If you want a dark frame, ask about products rated for hot climates.

Modern aluminum windows

  • Slim frames and a clean, modern look, popular on mid century and contemporary homes.
  • Very strong, which helps with big sliders and window walls.
  • Thermal breaks. Better models have an insulating strip inside the frame that cuts the heat transfer old aluminum was known for.
  • Usually costs more than vinyl for a comparable window.

The frame matters, but the glass does most of the work. Dual pane with Low-E is the real upgrade over old single pane aluminum, whichever frame you choose.

Still living with old aluminum windows?

We can quote replacing the whole window or just the glass, and tell you which one makes sense for your frames.

What about fiberglass and wood?

Fiberglass and wood clad windows are out there too. They cost more and are usually chosen for a specific look or an older home. If you live in a historic district, the rules on what you can install matter more than the material. See Sacramento historic district window rules.

Can I keep my aluminum frames?

Sometimes. If the frames are straight and the tracks work, some aluminum sashes can take a thin dual pane unit, but many older frames are too shallow to hold one. We check that on site. If the frames are bent, corroded or drafty, replacing the whole window is the better investment.

Quick answers

Which is more energy efficient, vinyl or aluminum?

Vinyl, in most cases. Aluminum with a thermal break narrows the gap, but standard aluminum moves far more heat than vinyl.

Do vinyl windows hold up in Sacramento heat?

Quality vinyl windows are made for hot climates and hold up well. Ask about heat ratings if you want a dark frame color.

Are aluminum windows cheaper than vinyl?

Not usually anymore. For comparable dual pane windows, vinyl is often the lower cost option.

Can I mix vinyl and aluminum windows on one house?

You can, but most people keep the street side of the house consistent so it looks right from the curb.
